New Jersey spells out sampling and data needed for site-specific soil cleanup standards

An October 14, 2026, state notice says depth-based alternative soil standards need full sampling to the default standard, lists required data, and says unneeded submissions will not be reviewed.

Brownfield buyers and the cleanup consultants working for them in New Jersey may need more soil sampling before they can rely on a site-specific soil standard, and will get no state review of one they did not need. On October 14, 2026, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ("NJDEP") issued a notice through its site remediation email list titled "Alternative Remediation Standard and Compliance Averaging Determinations," which explains when an alternative remediation standard should be submitted and lists "common mistakes" in submissions, citing N.J. Admin. Code § 7:26D apps. 7, 8.
