Federal: Regulators find no significant impact from restarting Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island reactor
Federal nuclear and energy agencies issued a final environmental finding for the Crane Clean Energy Center restart, and the nuclear regulator upheld denial of a hearing; license decisions remain pending.
Data center developers and power buyers counting on new supply in the PJM grid, which serves Pennsylvania, now face a narrower set of federal steps before an 835-megawatt reactor in Dauphin County can run again. On September 25, 2026, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”), the federal agency that licenses nuclear plants, and the U.S. Department of Energy (“DOE”) issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact for returning the Christopher M. Crane Clean Energy Center, formerly Three Mile Island Unit 1, to power operations, 91 Fed. Reg. 60,988 (Sept. 25, 2026).
