New York awards contracts for 950 megawatts of grid batteries, including two Bronx projects

The State's first bulk storage solicitation contracted eight battery projects that are paid only once operating and must be in service by the end of 2030, alongside 13 wind, solar and hydro projects.

Battery storage developers now hold State revenue contracts for nearly a gigawatt of New York projects, but none of that money flows until each site is permitted, built and running. On September 23, 2026, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”), the State's energy agency, announced contracts with eight bulk energy storage projects totaling 950 megawatts, chosen from 46 bids totaling about 6 gigawatts, in the first of the bulk storage solicitations directed by the Public Service Commission's Order Establishing Updated Energy Storage Goal and Deployment Policy, Case 18-E-0130 (N.Y. Pub. Serv. Comm'n June 20, 2024) (the “2024 Order”). The same announcement awarded 13 wind, solar and hydroelectric projects totaling more than 719 megawatts from NYSERDA's 2025 Tier 1 Renewable Energy Standard solicitation.
