New Jersey regulators will hear utility's 500-megawatt Salem County battery plan once its filing is complete
The state utility board named a presiding commissioner for Atlantic City Electric's request to own a 500-megawatt battery plant and recover its cost from customers, after staff found the petition incomplete.
Storage developers selling into New Jersey's wholesale power market may soon compete with a utility-owned battery plant whose cost would be recovered from ratepayers. On September 9, 2026, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (the “BPU”), which regulates the state's electric utilities, designated Commissioner Emma Rebhorn to preside over Atlantic City Electric Company's (“ACE”) petition for a battery storage system of up to 500 megawatts in Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, and said it would retain the case for hearing once staff find the petition administratively complete.
